Rikki Clos, LCSW

Pronouns: they/them

Intersecting identities that inform my practice: I identify as a White, Nonbinary Demipansexual Queer person who was socialized as female.

Background & Approach: I became a therapist because a friend had a transphobic experience with a therapist, and I knew there was a better way to treat gender expansive clients. I have more than eight years combined experience in the mental health field working with clients in a number of different clinical areas from a shelter for intimate partner abuse survivors to detoxification for substance use. I have four years of counseling experience, primarily working with gender expansive people both on exploration of their gender and the other factors affecting their lives. I strive to provide a safe space for clients to both explore identities while also making space to embark on a road to healing. My approach tends to be laid-back, warm, and accepting. I endeavor to help support clients to improve their relationship with themselves and others. By collaborating with clients to find the balance between support and challenge in the therapeutic relationship, I find that we can work together to build trust, foster interpersonal skills, and establish a new narrative about relationships which is transferable to clients’ lives day-to-day. I’m an empathic listener, and also I actively participate in sessions by making observations, offering support, and asking questions which help clients get to know themselves and their thought patterns better so that they may make informed decisions which align with their value systems.

Theoretical & Clinical Orientation: While I have taken valuable pieces from many different approaches, the center of my practice is cognitive-behavioral, harm reduction, and strengths-focused when I’m not practicing EMDR with clients. Much of my approach hinges on reducing the harm that many different factors (e.g. thoughts, behaviors, systems) have on our individual lives; since “perfect” solutions are oftentimes unattainable, finding avenues which are more sustainable can be important. Much of my education focused on the way that systems interact with our lives and I have found that Narrative-style or Internal Family System-style unblending of systemic forces on a mezzo (e.g. parents’ voices) and macro levels (e.g. internalized transphobia, racism, capitalism) is a valuable tool to clarify a client’s values and support changes that allow for choices to better align with the self. I also am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based treatment for trauma, which I find most helpful when something is really stuck in client’s lives in order to get it unstuck and adaptively processing again. Additionally, I have also taken pieces of psychodynamic processing, interpersonal effectiveness skills-building, and motivational interviewing to create a well-rounded approach to psychotherapy practice.
